Sri Lanka Yoga Retreat

14th – 21st July 2019

Villa de Zoysa - Yoga Retreat in Sri Lanka

Join Barbara at Villa De Zoysa

Villa de Zoysa is a beautiful colonial mansion, set within lush and leafy gardens, in Boossa – a small town located on the south coast of Sri Lanka.

There are two purpose-built options for our twice daily yoga practices – in the morning we will practice in the open-sided shala that overlooks a freshwater swimming pool and lets in the sounds of birds and the ocean. In the evening, we also have the option of practising on the yoga platform overlooking the beach, or on the beach itself,  as the sun sets.

Between classes, the day is your own. You have plenty of time to explore the local area and visit nearby attractions, or perhaps you prefer to stay in the grounds of Villa de Zoysa, resting in a hammock or enjoying a good book or conversation on one of the spacious terraces.

This retreat will leave you refreshed, revitalised and reconnected within!

The Yoga

Barbara teaches Hatha Yoga of Krishnamacharya as taught to her by her teachers, the Mohan Family of Svastha Yoga Ayurveda. This is a simple yet profound practice that is deeply calming as well as subtly strengthening. The asana practice combines functional movement with good breathing and mindfulness. This lays the foundation from which a positive mind-body connection emerges and cultivates a healthy body & calm mind.

Barbara’s classes are inclusive and suitable for all levels of experience from absolute beginners to experienced practitioners building on previous knowledge. All classes will incorporate chanting, movement, pranayama & meditation.

Cuisine

The food at Villa de Zoysa is both delicious and nutritious. Many visitors consider this to be one of the highlights of their stay. Each day fresh and seasonal food is purchased from local vendors and prepared with care on site.

Delectable vegetarian dishes will be served in the villa’s dining room where we all sit together around a long table – a time to connect and share experiences as well as food.

Getting There

The main international airport in Sri Lanka is in Colombo (Bandaranaike International Airport), approx 145 km from the retreat centre.

Our gracious host, Devinda, can arrange transfers for you from Colombo airport and where possible we will suggest shared rides to split costs. Once we know how many people can share a ride, we can let you know an estimated cost.

Other Activities

Our host and the owner of Villa de Zoysa, Devinda, is happy to arrange excursions to local sites of interest for the group or individuals – heritage sites, tea plantations, Buddhist temple, cinnamon families.

Or perhaps spend your days at the local beaches – swimming, surfing, snorkelling.

Villa de Zoysa also has Ayurvedic treatments available by appointment. Luscious re-energising massages, pedicures and manicures provided by internationally trained female staff.

This is a review from New Zealand Yoga Teacher, Janie Nott who attended a yoga retreat at Villa de Zoysa in October 2018:

“Imagine yourself in a time back then where time stood still and life was simple. Imagine a huge dining hall with a giant candlelit candelabra and the most beautiful hand cooked curries, roti and buffalo yogurt in terracotta pots. Picture antiques from decades ago amidst incense and white Buddhas. Imagine a yoga shala where the two resident dogs sit and wait at the gate and the coconut water awaits and the birds of faraway song chime.

At first I was a little concerned that the villa was close to a train track and must admit the first night was a little disturbing but, I have to say it didn’t take long before I fell in love with the train. It was so indicative of Sri Lanka….people hanging out of the windows, waving etc.

This country has wild peacocks and wild beaches with turtles. It has an untouched and raw feeling. Mangoes and rickshaws, Buddhist temples and Buddha heads entice peace in the chaos. Elephants and bats. Rich and poor. For me I felt like it was a chance to see both the world and my life anew.” – Janie Nott
