Pregnancy Yoga

During pregnancy, a woman’s body and emotions go through many changes. Svastha pregnancy yoga classes will empower you with tools and information that will help you move through these times of change with as much ease and grace as possible. They will support you throughout your pregnancy, preparing you physically and emotionally for birth and the years of motherhood to come.

Pregnancy yoga classes are gentle in nature, combining slow, mindful movement with breathing. They are perfect whether you are discovering yoga for the first time or expanding on previous experience.  Barbara will ensure that the practice is comfortable for both you and your baby. She will encourage you to slow down during your practice, connect inward with your growing baby and give yourself space to fully experience this special and important time.

Barbara teaches from her home studio and takes a maximum of five students in each class. The classes are very relaxed and friendly, with a strong focus on individual attention.

Barbara is one of Auckland’s most experienced pregnancy yoga teachers. She creates a nurturing and supportive environment for her students. This is a place where you can feel easy connecting and sharing with other women on a similar journey.

“Dearest Barbara – I wanted to say a huge thank you for the profound impact your teachings had on my pregnancy and labour. You truly do the most wonderful work & must make such a difference to so many women”~ Jess Knox

What to Expect

Classes begin with a short opening chat where each mother-to-be is given the opportunity to share how she is feeling and ask any questions she may have.

From here we continue with 30 – 40 minutes of asana practice (postures). We focus on postures that are particularly valuable during pregnancy, labour & birth and that will:

    • Strengthen your back and help to eliminate or reduce back / hip pain common during pregnancy
    • Strengthen your legs and increase stamina, preparing you mentally and physically for labour & birth
    • Bring openness to the chest and shoulders, improving circulation and preparing for breast feeding
    • Help to position baby optimally for birth
The next part of the class is dedicated to rest where you are fully supported with bolsters and blankets, allowing the benefit of your practice to be fully received and leaving you feeling refreshed and re-energised.

A large focus in our pregnancy yoga classes is breathing, both during the physical practice of postures and as an exercise in itself. The last part of the class is spent sitting quietly with your breath and your baby.

You will learn specific breathing techniques that bring about a deep sense of calm, inner awareness and focus. This focused breathing will help you move any physical and emotional resistance that may arise during labour, birth and beyond, helping both you and your baby to remain calm and relaxed throughout your journey together.

Please note, casual attendance is only available for women who have attended at least two full 5-week programs and are nearing their big day.

Can I start part way through a 5-week block?
Generally, our classes are booked in advance for the entire program. However, if you have missed the start and want to get started straight away, you are welcome to join part way through, provided we have space available.
The fee will be adjusted to reflect the late start and will revert to the usual fee for subsequent programs you attend.
What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement. Your body temperature is higher during pregnancy so it is a good idea to wear layers that you can remove or add as necessary.

Can I eat before class?
It is better not to eat a large meal two hours before class; however it is important to eat regularly, so a light snack around 30 minutes before class is fine.
What time should I arrive?
For your first class please arrive 10 minutes early so that Barbara can introduce herself, show you the facilities and discuss any queries you may have. After the first class, try to aim for at least 5 minutes before class – but never stress or rush if you are running late.
